THE SCHOOL BROADCASTING NETWORK INC & FUNKY KIDS RADIO

The School Broadcasting Network Inc is a registered youth charity based in Melbourne, Australia and our network is extremely honoured to have Dame Jane Goodall as SBN's International Patron and world renowned futurist and best selling author Dr Peter Ellyard as National Patron.

SBN empowers young people to communicate their ideas, innovations and passion for sharing culture and creating a healthy, sustainable and equitable future for all children and future generations globally. The Network offers enrichment opportunities for young people to produce a range of media - for young people, by young people - and SBN is built upon the foundation of valuing and encouraging inclusion, diversity, environmental and social responsibility, cultural richness and creativity in the broadcast experience.  SBN produces a range of media for young people, by young people including the ‘SwitchOn Schools’ radio training program, and our national radio programs ‘Primary Perspectives’, 'Your Planet Needs You!', ‘Music Matters’, ‘The Funky Kids Hour’, and ‘The Royal South Street Hour’, which is in partnership with the Royal South Street Society - the largest eisteddfod in the southern hemisphere.

SBN's flagship program 'Primary Perspectives' won the CBAA Best New Talk Program Award in 2012, as well as four top 4 finalist nominations for the show, which had never been achieved before (nor since) for a show hosted entirely by young people under the age of 14 at the time.  Primary Perspectives broadcasts live on 94.1fm 3WBC (Mon 6-7pm) and rebroadcasts nationally via numerous stations around Australia (local times) including SYN FM (Sat 9-10am) Melbourne and via CRN, the Community Radio Network, including 88.1fm 2RDJ (Tues 4-5pm) in Sydney, Radio Goolarri in Broome (Tues 3-4pm), 2XX  (Sat 9-10am) Canberra and 89.1Cairns FM (Sun 10-11am) FNQ. Primary Perspectives also broadcasts 4 times per week on Funky Kids Radio (Wed 4-5pm, Thurs 8-9am, Sat 5-6pm, Sun 7-8am AEST or AEDT summer time),  in USA, Canada and the Caribbean via Kidz Hub Media Network (Tues 9pm PT, Wed 1pm PT / 3pm EST, Fri 10pm PT, Sat 12pm PT  / 3pm EST USA) and on Radio Küken Schweiz in Europe (Sat 10-11am CEST). Primary Perspectives celebrated its 10 Anniversary in July 2020, with more than 500 weekly shows produced over the last decade with an extensive A list of guests from all over the world.

SBN's award winning team has mentored over 400 young people to date within a culture of positive, responsible and solution based production and reporting - with the vision that students and interns who choose a future career in the industry will become catalysts for the new paradigm of positive, proactive and socially responsible media. SBN added the online children's station Funky Kids Radio to its portfolio in July 2016 with the aim to develop it into one of the world’s best non-commercial, online children’s radio station. FKR broadcasts a broad range and very high percentage of independent music from around the world (including classical music), as well as excellent edutainment content for young people, by young people - all suitable for preschoolers to upper primary level children, parents and teachers. Our aim is also to support independent artists, children's entertainers and story tellers from around Australia and the world, by sharing their music and stories with Funky Kids Radio's extensive global audience.

Rachel and Michael Cooper launched Funky Kids Radio in 2010 to offer a content appropriate radio station especially for ‘tiny tots to tweens’ and at that time Funky Kids Radio was the very  FIRST 24/7 online streaming children’s radio station licensed in Australia. Rachel continues to consult for Funky Kids Radio from time to time and SBN extends admiration and appreciate to both Rachel and Michael for their vision and dedication in creating such a great children's radio station!
